MARTIAL ARTS

{R}EVOLUTION

No styles, no systems, no rituals, no lineages, no masters, no labels, no belts, no katas, no uniforms, no dogmas;

Only the process of self actualization & personal expression of truth through functional combative movement and fitness.

On a purely physical level, we share how to individually and collectively use all of our natural tools as well as extended ones, offensively and defensively in a strategic and tactical manner and in all ranges of combat.

We're put through functional physical fitness training where we learn to push ourselves through our own perceived limitations. We also have much to offer on nutrition, health and optimum performance.

On a more cerebral level we learn about the psychology of violence, fear, stress & confrontation management skills, deescalation strategies and holistic survival tactics.

As the mind navigates the body; by challenging personal self defense dogmas and individual & core belief systems, personal growth and evolution occurs.

On a human level, we learn about the ripple effect and the moral, legal, and ethical consequences of our chosen actions while self examining our darkest emotions. We are encouraged to question everything, to learn to think for ourselves, to be more accountable and research everything we learn and to be open and responsive to life without judgment.

On a personal level, the training can make you face and slay your own demons.

Everything shared here is highly encouraged to be individually researched, to “absorb what is useful, add what is specifically of your own and disregard the rest.”

An inspiring and brutal account of reality:

From Chris Roberts of Safe International:

"Today I taught a man and a woman privately for four hours. The woman bought this private self defense lesson for him as a Christmas gift! He had been in a situation where he was stabbed by his son. I want to thank him for his openness in discussing what must be about the most difficult scenario one could ever find themselves in.

After he told me the story, he wondered about what he should have done differently. I said NOTHING as I felt the chills in my body. You are alive. He handled it, in my opinion, perfectly, using a chair to create some space between him and his son. He used Rich Dimitri's/Senshido verbal tactics which I told him likely saved his life! He used empathy with his son in the middle of a knife attack! When I told him how amazingly he handled it, he was shocked thinking he should have done so many things different.

It just confirmed that people who teach knife defense analyzing attacks from different angles, etc need to really look at the rage, unpredictability, and sheer panic of a real life knife attack and address it not just physically, but environmentally, verbally, and psychologically. I told him his story taught me more about knife defense than anything I have learned, and confirmed what I now know about knife attacks.

He just remembered his son slashing over and over. He did get cut and injured, but he is alive and so is his son. And imagine if it was a family member who you love? This is a guy who could share his story and you would get more out of what he did than anything any of us instructors could teach. Thanks again to them!" ~ Chris Roberts - Safe International

Amen brother. Thank you for sharing that.

A Taste of the Philosophical Side of Senshido

Senshido is an interesting methodology in several respects, from their famed “RBSD” (reality based self defense) high standards (should any self-defense method not be based in reality?), their Shredding conceptual tool and emphasis on behavioral/emotional delivery system to their hard-core approach on protective offense training and physical culture. One component of the Senshido methodology that began quietly but is budding more and more in the spotlight is their personal and daily philosophies, what is referred to as “Zenshido” on their old website (2 weeks, eh boss?).

When I began in the “Senshido International movement”, I was very much against philosophy. In fact, I recall one of the first posts I every made on the Senshido forum as knocking Bruce Lee’s JKD due to its philosophical nature. I was blind and thought I was tough (or at least wanted to sound tough, as most armchair warriors do) so I didn’t “need” the philosophy “junk”. I was also hypocritical in that I preached and attached myself to a particular faith, without ever truly exercising its principles (at that junction in life). I had “book smarts”, but had not experienced my faith through putting it into physical, behavioral, emotional and psychological practice. I’d like to think that I’ve come a long way from then, but I am not egotistical to think I have “reached” the pinnacle of what human beings are capable of.

Senshido has forced me to evaluate myself on several levels, why do I do the things I do, why do I believe the things I believe, think the way I do, behave the way I behave, why is my initial reaction to such-and-such this-and-that? I am not referring to religious beliefs, but rather, what makes me tick the way I do? This has caused for serious introspection and honest self-evaluation – something that I was not too fond of, due to the complexity of the human nature and my desire to lie to myself, believing I am not as “bad” or “in need of help” in certain areas as I truly was. Please understand, I still have my demons I fight every day. I am not where I should be at, but I am making progress. I have learned, via my time in Senshido, to see my own illusions that I have built around my life and my mind, to understand that they are illusions and even how to begin to change them to where they reflect reality. This has been such a freeing experience, words cannot do justice.

I used to fight and argue. I grew up in a home where I was yelled and cussed at for 8 hours at a time for something stupid kids typically did and tried to hide and suffered some rough punishment, as others have (thankfully not as bad as it could have been or as others suffer daily). I have always associated pain with violence and fear with violence. I was at the point where I would hit my head on a cabinet door that I opened up and clinched my fist in an effort to hit the cabinet door. This was instinctual, took no forethought. Now, before we go any further, the truth of the matter is – this was childish and rather stupid. It’s an object, has no emotional or intentional qualities about it. It was my own mistake, misjudgment, etc. It was my fault short and simple. Honest introspection has caused me to evaluate why I do what I do, what is the root, and to change it. I began to realize why I associated pain with violence or why I have a short fuse and have begun changing my response and reaction. It is liberating.

It might not be a popular thing to say and I am sure many will disagree with me (sorry GEE!), but I believe Senshido to be a rebirth of what the “traditional martial arts” was meant to be. Originally, Martial Arts were methods of fighting that included philosophical emphasis on maturing and correcting the self.

Senshido has given me the tools to begin this process and for that I am very thankful. Sure, my confidence handling myself in a street altercation has greatly increased, yes, I am more tactful and respectful when dealing with people and working on eradicating my pride/ego, this has been the greatest gift I have personally received from Senshido.

If you want a method that enhances your survivability, then you cannot go wrong with Senshido and hundreds of thousands of people would tell you the same. However, if you want the means to begin to heal yourself, to see who you truly are and if you don’t like it, acquire the tools to change it, then I highly recommend Senshido as well. This, I believe, is the essence of Rich's "In Total Defense of the Self". Continue training realistically to survive reality, be it physical, verbal, emotional, psychological or spiritual.

Now stop reading and do some shit.

Always thankful,

Malachi Bond

How's your awareness???

This is from my friend Aladdin's wall off facebook.  Honestly, I got it right away... we have actual drills at Senshido to develop just this kind of awareness and peripheral vision development.

So how many of you got it or missed it?

A few new youtube clips:

The following clips are from one of more recent workshops at Crossfit Potential hosted by Chris Roberts of Safe International.  Each clip is titled and self explanatory... enjoy, or don't... up to you. :`)

The day I got bitch slapped.... lmao...

I am merely human... I too err, screw up and all around fuck shit up for myself... just look at what I made my poor dog wear....but the learning never ceases.... the evolution is the hardest part.... meaning, not just learning from our own mistakes, but making sure they don't repeat themselves often all the while being accountable.

I worked in Cairo, Egypt on contract with International Women’s movements Girls Gone Gorgeous, the Association for Women's Total Advancement & Development (AWTAD) and The Association for the Development and Enhancement of Women (ADEW) to bring forth education and information on the empowerment of women in Egypt from October of 09 to October of 10 before moving back to Canada, out west this time to Jasper Alberta.

In all of my classes without fail, I mention the critical importance of ego awareness, both our own and that of our potential attacker(s).  I teach about the ripple effect of out actions, accountability and primarily working from the higher self through self actualizations, awareness and daily integration. I explain that it is a never ending battle, a daily one, especially when living in an ego driven materialistic societies and that all our thoughts, intentions and actions create a ripple effect therefor responsibility for out thoughts, intentions and actions is important.

I teach to defuse.  I teach to give your potential attacker the benefit of the doubt of figuring out what kind of individual we are dealing with, a good guy having a bad day or a genuine 'bad guy'... giving the person a moral, legal and ethical way out, knowing that if things got violent and you defended yourself, you did so because it was truly you last option.

So I'm in Cairo Egypt... it's early November and I haven't been here a month yet.  I was told that dog's are not exactly 'welcomed' creatures, that in their belief system, for better or worst, they thwart angels away and that a black dog, which my female Labra-doodle... yes... Labra-doodle.... named Punchy, just happens to be, are evil.

Lmao, the Devil incarnate.... lmfao.... some beliefs just aren't functional....

I found this out through first hand experience, and it is truly fascinating the chain events that took place and my very own reactions and awareness of them as they were unfolding and the personal lessons learned for me...

It's a gorgeous Saturday morning and I'm on way to walking my tyrannosaurus rex... ok, my dog... before leaving to a beach house to teach a seminar on the beach for the weekend... I know, hard life... so as I walk down a flight of stairs 4 floors down, I can hear a female couple walking down a flight ahead of me.  The stairs spiraled down in a square format and they were 1 full staircase ahead of me going down.  They were approximately, 20 feet away at least and I had my dog on a short leash specifically because I knew how people felt about them.

By the time the lady (approx. 40 years old) and her daughter (I shortly found out, approx. 16 years old) arrived at the very last step, the young woman slipped on her what appeared to me anyway, to be 27.5 inch stiletto heels and landed softly on her padded ass. Not trying to be mean, just stating a fact, it was more of a humiliating slip and fall on the ass than anything painful whatsoever. With concern I take a couple of steps down the stairs asking if she's ok and the mother flips.

Literally.... She gets up after helping her clumsy daughter off her butt and begins throwing all kinds of insults at me... I mean all kinds, blaming my dog for tripping her daughter.... while we were at this point, 18 feet away on a completely different stair case.

So I apologize and explain to her in the best of my Arabic at this point which is still rather rusty but I can carry a conversation no problem, that its impossible for my dog to have tripped her as, well... look where the fuck we are.... I mean, unless my dog has Mr. Fantastic stretch man powers, it just isn't happening... mathematically impossible.  Illogical... she had to see that.

Of course, she was in her ego so she saw nothing, and me being in mine, rather than do what I teach, I completely go against my own shit and I tell her she's wrong.... Mistake number 1... lmfao....

So she goes on insulting me, calling me every name in the book you can think of, to which at this point I figure fuck this, she's nuts, I'm outta here and I began to walk away circling her making sure I maintain at least 4 to 5 feet of distance and as much as the lobby of the apartment will allow.  She doesn't let up though... she begins to follow me, hurling all kinds of vile crap and then she insults my parents....

I snap. Mistake number 2.  I turn around, and contradict myself once again by engaging after having cleared the situation and allowing her words and tone to control me like the puppet I became for her... I began insulting her back... mistake number 3 rotflmfao,,,, now I'm giving much better than I'm getting cause, well, I'm pretty creative with my verbal onslaughts because I have had friends my whole life who dished out like champs and I had to keep up, and the ripple effect of that actions was the following:

So we're standing toe to toe now, insulting the crap out of each other basically and what I don't notice is the purse in her hand that she uses to bitch slap me across the face with in the most non telegraphic way you could imagine... lolol.... her hand from her hip where she was holding her purse, just flew from its original position straight up and WHACK across my face.... I didn't even feel it... but man oh man did my ego... my ego grabbed my higher self by our testicles and made him retreat into some dark corner of our mind and out the mother fucker came with a vengeance.... lol...

So I'm literally beside myself now... and in a third person perspective, I am watching my left arm reach for the woman who is right in front of me not even a foot away, and I can hear my higher self just fuckin bellowing at the top of his lungs "DON'T FUCKIN DO IT MAN!!!!!" lmfao... and as I hear this voice, my hand is now just an inch from her and still going and I end up just grabbing her by her lapel.

The voices are now battling inside my head... "DROP THE BITCH LIKE A TOILET SEAT!!!" - "LET HER GO BROTHER, LET HER GO, THIS ISN'T YOU!!!!" and I find myself just releasing and pushing her away toward the wall which was at her right.  She just lightly slammed into it, shocking her much more than causing any kind of pain at all much like her purse slap to me.

It was a duel of the egos lol... right there and then, her husband who entered the lobby put his hand on my shoulder to which I just removed and stepped back telling the whole lot of em to stay the hell away from me, that they were nuts and that I was just leaving and I was sorry for their daughter tripping but I had nothing to do with it.

I leave and as I do, I can hear them screaming and yelling about calling the cops etc. and I just take off only to come back 15 minutes after my dog did her business and only to find my father toe to toe with the woman's husband, surrounded by 40 people and my dad is yelling "My son would never hit a woman!!!"

So I get there and get to my dad and explain that I didn't hit her, that I pushed her away from me after she smacked me in the face to which I'm feeling like a complete idiot for, completely stunned by my reaction. The cousins of the girl are now involved, 3 of them walk over to me and begin getting in my face abut pushing their aunt and at this point, I've got all my shit together again and I'm handling it quite differently.

End result, they threatened to call the cops, we threatened to call the Canadian embassy, everyone was all of a sudden my best friend.  It seems that foreigners, at the time anyway, were "worth" more than Egyptians to their piece of shit former government due to the financial aspect of it all.  As a foreigner in Egypt, prior to the recent revolution anyway, if you were a man, you had more rights and power than the cops.

Interesting day... I ended up apologizing honestly to the woman and her husband for how I had reacted. I felt like crap about it.  She didn't apologize to me at all but she accepted mine.  That was what mattered anyway.  The very  same day I taught a seminar on the beach in Stella, Egypt.  I told everyone what had just happened to illustrate that no one is infallible, we are all at the mercy of our egos, it is indeed a daily battle, sometimes easier than others, but a daily one none the less... one that I am happy to be winning much, much more often than not and when I do lose, I learn, apologize and grow from the experience and this was a hell of a learning one for me.

Life showed me once again where my place is in the grand scheme of things... it taught me to look deeper and not to forget the most important thing, and that is to keep looking and introspecting, not get lazy and keep doing some shit! Because no matter who you are, we all have our demons... all of us, like it or not, admit it or not... and the greatest tool we have against our demons is honest accountability.

Much peace y'all.

Rich

A Watchful Eye.... Hiring a Sitter?

The following is an excerpt from our Guardian Angel book:

Leaving your child with a babysitter is never easy.  Many factors have to be thought out before an individual is entrusted with your child.

Do not leave your child with a child.  Sure there are young adults who are more than eager to earn money for sitting but they have to know the potential dangers that exist both within the house and out.  Set ups can occur with simple phone calls and invite danger to and possibly inside your house.  The young adolescent should undergo a friendly yet serious interview of, “What would you do if…”

Should the adolescent prove that they are capable of handling stressful situations and handle the interview with intelligent replies, then you are that much closer to finding a good sitter.  Although we all mature at various ages, I would not recommend a sitter under the age of 14.

Newspapers are an option for parents who are looking for a trusted sitter but it can also invite others whose profession and intent is on doing harm to a child.  Use this less personal use of advertising only as your last option.

Even though the percentage of children who are assaulted in some way are done so by relatives or family members (85%).  We still feel that family is usually the best sitter since the child already has a relationship with the relative or family member.  Obviously keep your eyes and ears open and listen to your intuition.  If a relative or family member’s behaviour is questionable then do not trust this person to watch over your child.

If the child is upset over the individual you have asked to sit for them then ask yourself why. Do not ignore any warning signals of someone (family member or not) hurting your child.

You know your child better than anyone, but do not displace warning signs as merely a tool that the child is using since they don’t want you to go out that evening.  Take a step back from your inner circle of knowledge to the family and sitter and look at the situation from an outsider’s point of view, based on past & current factual events.

Other options include speaking to friends and neighbours, & getting information on past or current sitters, which they trust.  Before you even offer the possibility of a job to a potential sitter, you’re already one step ahead of the interview process.

If you have no luck with neighbours, or friends, try the local community center, or familiarize yourself with other parents on a parent’s night at a local school.  The more people you get to know, the more options you will have at your disposal.  Not only is it resourceful to know more parents but can also be therapeutic in many other areas to a certain extent.   Think about it, you already share something in common with another parent, you both have a child.  Take that in any direction you choose (child rearing, babysitter advice, adolescent behaviours, adult conversation, etc).

Once you located someone and have gone through the interview process with good results then the next step is introducing the potential new sitter to your child.  This way you will be able to see exactly how the potential sitter interacts with your child.  Keep in mind that what you see may not be what will occur if you weren’t there.  Pay the individual for their time for this aspect of the interview (it’s certainly worth it) but allow alone time.  Do not turn your back and go about your business with this person in full charge of your child but allow at least 30 minutes of time to pass where you have left the room but still keep all within ear shot & use your awareness to judge how the everything is going between your child and the sitter.

Always check references! Even if the individual came recommended by someone you know, take the time to check  more than one reference.

Do not allow the sitter to have visitors come by unless it is someone you know and trust as well as your sitter.

If you have a dog, cat or other then introduce the family pet to your sitter to see how the two will get along.  Keep in mind that certain animals (especially dogs) can become very protective of the household and your children if you are no longer there.  Make sure your animal is properly trained for such circumstances.

If at any point you have a “feeling” that something is not right about leaving your child with the intended sitter then Don’t!!  Even if you have to make up a lie to end the evening early or before it even began, then do so!  It is your body’s way of saying that something just isn’t right.  You may not know why in the moment or even ever but it is a feeling in response to something that occurred (whether through dialogue or body language or other) and although your conscious mind may not have caught onto it, your subconscious did.  Pay Attention!

Once a sitter has been chosen, then the next step should be to show the house to the sitter and make them aware of any specialty locks on windows or doors that they should know about in case of an emergency.  Show them other phone lines available in the house, along with fire extinguishers.  Indicate what windows can be climbed out of should the need arise and other emergency exits.  Make sure all doors are properly locked and can be opened and relocked by your sitter.  If you have a pool, the pool area should be well locked.  Quiz them on it and go over details again to make sure they’re aware of all you’ve shown them and can react quickly in case of an emergency.

Emergency numbers should be left by the phone for obviously…emergency situations.  Numbers of where you can be reached, including your cellular phone number(s) is best.  In case you cannot be reached, numbers of family members, friends, neighbours or others who are trust worthy should be noted.  The obvious police, fire, hospitals, doctor’s numbers, poison control centres, etc. should be included.  Information should be clearly typed so there is no confusion in deciphering a phone number during an emergency.

Should your child have an allergy, it is imperative that you advise and remind your sitter of this condition and what to do and who to call in case your child has an allergic reaction.  If medication has to be given, a list of how to administer the proper doses and which medicines at what time is highly important.   If you can have a print out of your child’s medical history readily available to your sitter then should the need arise, your sitter will be more capable of seeking the proper help from the authorities while waiting for the professionals to arrive and help.

On the list of phone numbers make sure you have included your full address with cross streets indicated should the proper authorities need further information as to the whereabouts of the emergency.

Before leaving the house, check for objects or hazards that should be noted to the sitter or tidied away by yourself or child.  Theses hazards could include toys in the walkway, matches, lighter fluid, plastic bags, easily accessible medications, poisons or other possible dangerous items.

If you do have a dog or cat and they have a little door by which they leave and enter at will, point this out to your sitter.  Also make sure that this area is strictly safe guarded so your child doesn’t use this as an exit.

Along with the emergency numbers list it would be handy to have a checklist for your sitter to follow through once you have left for the evening.  Aside from the above stated safety measures include times in which certain lights are to be turned on around the house.

A child should never be left alone for too long.  Even if the child is playing quietly or sleeping, make sure your sitter knows to periodically check up on your child.

In case of an emergency, should the sitter feel that they have to exit the home quickly, advise them to do so with the child.

A sitter should be advised as to whom they may open the door for.  If an individual persists in coming into the house, the sitter should have been instructed to contact the Police immediately.

Do not feel shy or embarrassed in any way by presenting your rules and regulations to your sitter.  You are not being paranoid; you’re being a well-prepared parent who is taking their child’s safety to heart.  Better to prevent than circumvent.

Apathy & denial makes victims of us all.

Personal evolution through ego awareness....

"What grasped me the most was the recognition of my ego, I noticed during the confrontation while I was approached and had my space invaded, it was my ego that took over immediately.  That was very revealing." said Robert Worsfield of Parks Canada.  "This was an amazing seminar, it's exactly what I was looking for, something that dealt more with the mind and humanity of self protection." stated Marc Eliot... and another great day on the job.  Great not because the participants could Shred anyone to pieces if necessary... not because I had effectively and efficiently taught them how to hurt, cripple and possibly kill another human being in self defense, but because they left that workshop with much to think about, consider and re-evaluate.

They got deeper in touch with who they were, with our mortality, our place on this earth, the ripple effect of our every thought and action... and of course, greater personal protection skills second to none. Naturally, in mid seminar, I decided to shred myself once again... this time it was demonstrating how I shredded myself in the last seminar in Barrie Ontario but this is neither here nor there really so... um... enjoy the pic of my self Shredulation.
Yep.
True self defense can be taught to any age, gender or limitability, Shred away brother!

Notice the similar position of the one being Shredded... the reaction is extremely similar in almost every individual Shredded world wide, panic arms flailing and total disorientation.

Throat strike off a one arm lapel threat...
Flinching off the passive stance with a jam, palm to the face & thumb to the eye off a sucker punch

Double handed lapel grab thwarted by a deflective jam, immobilization of the head and palm/Shredding start.

Ouch... lmao...

17 years and countless testimonials...

can't all be wrong?!?!?! lol...

A Weekend with Richard Dimitri - By Brian Opdenkelder:

Last weekend, I had the privilege of spending two days with Rich Dimitri - one of Canada’s premiere reality-based self-defence experts. Now, this fact is pretty cool in itself - based solely on the merit of Rich’s impressive credentials in the self-d biz – but this seminar turned out to be several times cooler than I had anticipated, as it revealed several deeper, more interesting and inspiring layers of Rich Dimitri, and his Senshido movement.

Rich, sharing his insights with Tiffany & Tim
Rich spent the first hour of Saturday’s session providing the “back-story” of Senshido. He discussed his personal journey, using accounts of his own personal and professional experiences with violence to shed a bright light on this ugly subject, for those in attendance.  This was certainly not what I expected, but Rich’s insights were truly enlightening - and important, as they established context for our training, and set the tone for the rest of the weekend.

Thank you Brian, the pleasure and honor was mine brother!

Canada Self Defense - Weekend With Rich Dimitri, Senshido Founder, Part 1
Toronto, Canada, March 3, 2011 - In this Canada self defense blog I would like to discuss my recent experiences with Rich Dimitri, Founder of Senshido.  This past weekend about 18 people experienced "self defense" with one of the World's Leading Reality Based Self Defense instructors.  Rich Dimitri is the founder of Senshido which means "Way of a 1000 Warriors".  I made a lot of notes in order to write this blog, but I think I will freestyle it with my thoughts.  In fact, I am going to make this a two part blog with Part 1 focusing on Rich Dimitri, The Man!.

AS THE RIPPLE EFFECTS GROW...
"Hey, I know your busy so don't read this till you have time, its not super important.
I just want you to know that everything you teach is real. The whole gross motor deal (which my books say 80% retention vs 10-15% for fine) is true, the whole verbal diffusion/distraction/deflection is true, the whole shredder concept is true, the whole don't become hyper-focused and miss opportunities is true. Its all true.

When I first trained with you, I was just a kid. Now I'm training with Wes and I've got my bac in Kinesiology and my masters in Physiotherapy and I'm seeing the entire process from the other side and everything you ever said about physiology and psychology is true. Never stop. You have found a piece of truth. The worst thing people do with that is to continue on as if nothing happened! Keep teaching the truth."
- Guy Razi

"Hello, I just finished your course this past weekend. I wanted to say, that firstly I'm STILL sore lol... and secondly I'm STILL talking about everything to every single person I come in contact with. Your course was awesome. I really worried that I wouldnt be able to handle all the coordination and memorization and Shredding was neither of those things!!! Im already feeling more confident in my day to day life becuse of your course. so thank you!" - Lauren McBride

"One of the things that stuck with me most:

There are no winners in a fight, only survivors. Regardless of who comes out on top, people's lives are affected. So take a step back, stay humble and don't be so quick to prove that you are the 'good guy.' We are all capable of the evil which we hate." - Tiffany Côté

"Richard Dimitri=self defense king. I've only picked up disc (DVD) one so far and I've been disecting it like crazy can't wait for more. Peace" ~ Rico Tarbert
